Spotlight on Girls' Club

117 NE 2 Street

Girls' Club presents their annual open-call exhibition "Art Fallout: Unframed," an exhibition of works on paper with a special public feedback element by way of color-coded sticky notes.

Art Fallout: Unframed
Over 100 works on paper from artists across South Florida will be exhibited as part of the interactive exhibit Art Fallout: Unframed. A panel of prominent South Florida arts professionals - including collectors, arts writers, gallery owners, independent curators, museum professionals - will informally judge the works and make comments on Purple stick notes. The public is also invited to give personal feedback to the artists via a system of color-coded handwritten messages. Artists go home with a stack of colorful sticky notes with comments, feedback, constructive criticism and sometimes contact info from interested curators/collectors.

Housed in a renovated warehouse whose facade illuminates from within, Girls' Club is a 501(c)3 private foundation and alternative space established in 2006 by Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz. As the only open private collection dedicated to contemporary art by women, Girls' Club mission is to educate the public, nurture the careers of female artists, and to serve as a resource for art students and scholars, curators and practicing artists on the contributions of women to the field of contemporary art. A special commitment is made to expose the work of local artists to a broader national and international audience.  Girls’ Club produces exhibitions, educational programming, publications and events that change lives, nurture local artists, and inspire cultural growth in Broward County. Artist talks, exhibition, panels, film screenings, workshops and outreach programs are developed and presented year round.

Radio-Active Records Pop Up Gallery
Upstairs in the mezzanine, Radio-Active Records presents a pop-up gallery and sound system with DJ Mike Ramirez. Founded in 2001, Radio-Active Records has been specializing in new and used independent vinyl, cds, turntables, accessories as well as operating as an special event venue in downtown Fort Lauderdale for over a decade.

Natalie Smallish of Radio-Active Records has organized Chicks with Discs, an audio and visual exhibition of vintage, rare and beloved vinyl records from local female record collectors. No longer are the labyrinth-ed halls and stacked racks of record stores the domain solely of the 'high fidelity' stereotype of the obsessive male. The aisles at Radio-Active, and the block-long lines for special events, have been increasingly gender balanced, with female collectors not only holding their own, but amassing an evermore eclectic mix of vinyl. The diverse showcase includes LPs by Black Sabbath, Joy Division, the Killers, Grover Washington Jr., Dolly Parton and Bob Dylan.

Mini Gramps & Super Duper Grub
Gramps Bar will be providing some social lubricants and fanciful cocktails by donation with their pop up Mini Gramps bar, while the Super Duper Grub food truck will be serving kid-friendly, health-conscious food just outside.

Modern Mystics

"Modern Mystics" is opening during Art Fall Out in anticipation of Halloween and Day of the Dead. Ancient traditions range from South America to Celtic Cultures. Spanning Christianity and Pagan beliefs, this time of the year brings out questions of the human condition. We explore fears of the unknown, our relationship to death and ancestors and what lies beyond the veil. What do contemporary artists have to say about it all? Come find out at World and Eye during Art Fall Out.
